"The Empire is Doomed",...and he knows it.

Our ship of state is the unsinkable Titanic. If the Trumpenführer understands this, then he's well ahead of most of the high rolling hucksters and apparatchiks inside the D.C. echo chamber.

But does he really? The recent commitment to an extended US military presence in Afghanistan suggests otherwise. According to one recent article in Counterpunch, its purpose is to counter Chinese economic activities in that region - building a new "Silk Road" and so on. So he's willing to extend Empire even as it advances into its frenzied death throes. Go figure.

What does Afghanistan have that we want? Do we need heroin that badly?

The only reason to stay in the area that I could think of is to keep the Pakistanis with their bombs on a short leash. Knowing that helicopters full of navy-seals might land in your back yard could give you second thoughts before you use your nukes.

This of course is making the assumption that doing so would be based on something like a rational thought process. As opposed to woeful ignorance or madness.

I just hope that we can elect enough people with some kind of grip on reality, before we completely wreck the planet.

The United States is in the process of losing what's left of its mind (which is not much) as it thrashes around in a frenzy trying vainly to control the whole globe. This project is doomed and will wreck the teetering remains of the country. No one with a grip on reality is currently in charge, nor like to be any time soon. Dingbats with their heads rammed firmly & enthusiastically up their asses will continue to run the show.

The planet will persist, but its life support systems are already deeply damaged. I expect humans will be far less numerous in a century or two than they are now, as will most other species. Rats, roaches and jellyfish should do well, though. I gather that geological history suggests that the biosphere will fully recover after some millions of years. So there's that to look forward to.
