I have lived long enough to see how things work. You give good or mostly limit your damage you either get good back or at least are left in peace.
You spend your life deliberately fucking everyone in sight up...you are so totally fucked. Maybe you don't lose wealth or power, but you get fucked with a long sharp white hot jagged whiskey bottle up your ass one way or another.
