In them things the whole shebang is ruled by "The Grand Council of Galactic Elders" "The Supreme Forum of Scientists" "Fathers of the Mystic Knights of the Seas" or some big guy named "Gort".

My take is that traditional American anti-intellectualism finally won out. The alternative tradition - Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman, Ginsberg and their like - have been thrown under the bus; the people have embraced hyper-individualism and developed a terminal case of capitalism. Even the universities are now just a racket for extracting wealth from students who will never be able to pay off their debts. Techno-crap is a contributor to this, but not the underlying cause.
Some dictators start out pretty well. They say Julius Caesar was good to the proles; that’s why a clutch of oligarchs did him in. Hitler did in fact achieve a spectacular turn-around of the German economy; Juan Peron didn’t do too badly, at first. The follow-through tends to be a bit a let-down, though.

Often it's found the white underclass votes for the rich because they think they're going to win the Lotto, and join them.
I'm actually somewhat amazed at his consistent delusion among so many. They vote for plutocrats who make laws which enrich the rich. These dummies thinking it's in their interest because they're bound to win big any day.
They also think all science is the devil's work. That the Earth is 6000 years old, and there's a big old guy in the sky watching everything they do. They also think that dolls secretly come to life.
I sort of agree on that one.
