"Colossus"

This Facebook disaster has me thinking m
uch of what's called the 'Net should be terminated. This is of course impossible. Since the thing was built to survive a Nuclear War. It's a vast immortal digital roach.

The 'net is information the most dangerous, and valuable thing in the human realm. It has near the sum of all the accumulated knowing of our species. It's Memory Alpha. This from the "Trek" mythology.
However like fire humanity isn't, and will never be ready for it. Individual people yes. The tribes of humanity never.

Instead of diving deep into our stored species knowledge. We have gravitated to hostile isolated clubs factions parties even armies. The most destructive, and stupid notions have traction now. With everyone their own TV radio station magazine book, and reality show.

I would have thought this would be amazingly great wonderful even. However neither I nor assorted big shot smarty pants figured in the actual level of emotional stability, and questionable intelligence of the sweaty masses.

I mean Jethro Clem, and their illiterate gun loving families used the 'net to resurrect Nazism. That, and they elected the most disturbed incompetent ignorant president in the 240+ years of our republic.
That is they elected someone like themselves. This while the alleged good guys were divided trying to elect Fidel, Hilary or some other jerk.

Turns out your vote really counts. ...Who knew?

Speaking of Fidel.
He had a higher approval rating than the U.S. Congress. The House has something like 8%. Fidel is in the double digits with like 12% or something. This actually makes a kind of demented sense considering what's going on.

Anyway shut the fucker down. ...if you can.

This shit is "Colossus". Watch the "Forbin Project" That thing was "Hal's" older brother. It didn't work out well for people. "Colossus" did fine. We were totally fucked.

Nah, the Web is not forever. It’s totally dependent for its existence on huge quantities of fossil fuel energy; keeping all those servers running makes it an incredible energy hog. That’s why Google gave up on powering their operations on solar - it simply didn’t produce anything like the required power, even after very substantial investment. And fossil fuel energy will eventually prove “eternal” in much the same way that whale oil did.

Also, the net can be taken out, or a very big chunk of it can, by an odd incident like, say, unexpected flooding of a major server farm. This came very close to happening a few years ago at a certain very important location in Silicon Valley.

I think this is actually good news. Humanity has become far too dependent on this proxy for human contact. Finding and disseminating useful information has always been a minority activity, so it shouldn’t really surprise us that the masses have been using it to propagate nonsense. It is now a major prop of the myth of progress, and its demise will contribute to the end of the latter. Huzzah!

Agree with you completely Z !!!

Here is my favorite quote from Hesse's Steppenwolf:

"'Most men will not swim before they are able to.' Is that not witty? Naturally, they won't swim! They are born for the solid earth, not for the water. And naturally they won't think. They are made for life, not for thought. Yes, and he who thinks, what's more, he who makes thought his business, he may go far in it, but he has bartered the solid earth for the water all the same, and one day he will drown." -Hermann Hesse, Steppenwolf
